Very special gift
We went on Wednesday 28th of May to view the Shard with afternoon tea at Novotel. Everything went down very well. The admin staff of “buyagift” had done a very good job in re-organising, due to unforeseen circumstance, a change of venue for the afternoon tea.
The Shard is an incredible all-glass tallest building in Europe at 310 m (1016 ft). The lift took us to 69th floor in two stages with a change over at 33 rd floor. Each journey took about a minute. Besides some of us feeling the”pop” in our ear, we were impressed by the smooth operation of the lift. The viewing balcony at 69th floor is marvellous. It provides a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of London. Despite our view being partly restricted by the cloudy weather, we experienced some spectacular sights supplemented by looking through free telescopes fitted at strategic points. Each telescope is attached with a screen in front of it which presents a magnified image of what is focussed on. Also, there is a written display of landmarks above each of the telescope site. All this is very helpful for any visitor to appreciate the beautiful landmarks of the capital. The moving boats in river Thames, trains and cars were all appeared to be in miniature scale which made us feel like watching objects in toy land and the people down below looked miniscule. Also, because of the tremendous height, quite a few of us felt a bit queasy while standing close to the edge of the platform to look at objects below. This feeling of uneasiness, however, only lasted for a few seconds. After completing a full circle at the 69th floor, we decided to go up further by walking up the stairs. We reached 72nd floor. It felt a bit cold and then we realized that we were in the open- air spire area. The air on our face could not have been fresher with no chance of pollution from the burning fossil fuel from cars or industry. It was an amazing feeling. We noticed that various landmarks appeared slightly different than from the 69th floor. For example, Gherkin appeared larger from the 72nd floor without any obvious reason. This optical illusion may be due to some physics involved in viewing from the all glass enclosed 69th floor compared to the open - air 72nd floor. Anyway, we have had an incredible day at the amazing Shard. The visit was next followed by an enjoyable afternoon tea at Novotel. We had a lovely day despite a miserable cloudy cold weather. We look forward to our next treat of Champagne Afternoon Tea Cruise in July.
