Ride the Shockwave at Drayton Manor

It's Europe's only stand up roller coaster and has been voted the "Best stand up roller coaster in the world" by the Roller Coaster Club of Great Britain.

Can you stand up to your fears and face the 4 inversions while on your feet? Standing at a terrifying 120ft tall and with a drop of 80ft (!!!), you'll reach speeds of over 50mph as you're flipped, turned and plunged.

This is a real must for every roller coaster fan!

Drayton Manor theme park and Zoo

Drayton Manor used to be the home of Robert Peel (who was Prime Minister not once but twice, fact fans!). It's not known if Peel was a big fan of white knuckle thrill rides, zoos and Thomas the Tank Engine but seeing as his former home is now Drayton Manor Theme Park we are forced to assume he would have been, had he been given the chance.

Yes, where previously there was a manor house there now stands a massive amusement and theme park hosting some of the most exciting and thrillingest (is that a word?) rides in Europe. From humble beginnings as a regular park in 1949, Drayton Manor theme park has grown and now offers something for everyone; determined thrill-seekers (Apocalypse and Shockwave anyone?); family friendly fun (Excalibur and the Pirate Adventure are perfect for the younger riders); to animal lovers (a zoo with over 100 species!).

We'd like to think that Robert Peel, the previously-mentioned former Prime Minister of Great Britain, would appreciate what's happened to his former home but if he wasn't convinced then a quick go on G-Force would almost certainly change his mind.

Drayton Manor Theme Park and Zoo facts

  • Stormforce 10 was launched at Drayton Manor in association with the RNLI and is (probably) the world's first charitable ride.
  • Riders on the G-Force experience an equivalent of up to 4.3 times normal gravity. To put this in context, Space Shuttle astronauts generally experience up to 3 times normal gravity during a lauch.
  • You can choose to either stand up or sit down when riding the (entirely appropriately named) Apocalypse. Drayton Manor is the only place to have a ride where you get the choice. The people who stand are tilted forward slightly - for added scream value! Those who sit have to dangle their legs helplessly as they wait for the Big Drop!
  • Shockwave is Europe's only stand up roller coaster.
  • The real name of the Fat Controller from the Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends stories is Sir Topham Hatt. You can meet Sir Hatt in person in Thomas Land at Drayton Manor Park. He has a very fine hat.
  • The zoo at Drayton Manor hosts over 100 species.
  • When Drayton Manor first opened in 1949 it was just a regular park with some nice tea rooms, a few boat rides and a pets corner. It's now a 280 acre site that welcomes over a million thrill seekers each year.
