About Liverpool FC
In English football, there is no bigger name than Liverpool Football Club. Formed in 1892, Liverpool FC are the most successful English football team of all time, both domestically and in European competition.
Shankly, Paisley, Dalgleish and Rush; the list of footballing geniuses and legends produced by the Anfield club is endless. What all these great men share in common is that the stage for their finest talents was Anfield, and a tour of the stadium will bring you into contact with all of their fabulous exploits.
It is a widely held view in the football world that there is no greater atmosphere than the one created at Anfield. With the club due to move to new and larger stadium in 2011, no Liverpool fan (or indeed any football fan) has any time to waste to visit one of the most famous of football amphitheatres.
Liverpool FC and Anfield facts
- Built in 1884, it may surprise many to learn that Anfield was originally the home of Everton FC, Liverpool’s great rivals. Don’t fret too much though Liverpool fans, Everton were thrown out of Anfield in 1891 after a rent dispute!
- The world renowned ‘Kop’ stand got its name from local journalist Ernest Edwards in 1906, when he christened it the ‘Spion Kop’ after the location of a battle in the Boer War during which many Liverpudlians lost their lives.
- The stadium has been consistently developed over the last century but commercial demands abound. As such the club will move into a brand new state-of-the-art 70,000 seater stadium in 2011. This huge transformation will see the club up-sticks and move into Stanley Park… about 300 yards away!
