Interesting facts about Birds of Prey
-
In the UK, our most common bird of prey is the buzzard, a large bird with rounded wings and a short neck and tail, less impressive than the eagles and hawks you'll be handling on our incredible birds of prey days!
-
Birds of prey are also known as "raptors". Confusingly, this is also the name of the dinosaurs that stalked Sam Neill and co. in Jurassic Park. You will not be interacting with dinosaurs on our birds of prey experience days* - raptor refers to a predator that stalks its prey using talons.
-
Move over owls. Hawks have been proven to be amongst the most intelligent of all birds, having undertaken a kind of bird IQ test called the avian IQ scale, devised by Dr Louis Lefebvre.
-
Not all owls are nocturnal - the Pygmy Owl hunts at twilight - during dusk and dawn. The Burrowing Owl and Short-eared Owl hunt during the day.
* - This is probably a good thing
