Golf Facts
-
The inaugural game of golf for which records survive was played at Bruntsfield Links, in Edinburgh, Scotland, in A.D. 1456. It is unknown if plaid was donned for the occasion, but we suspect one of the caddies wore a fetching tartan.
-
The word "Golf" makes its first written appearance in 1457 within a Scottish statute on forbidden games such as "gouf", possibly derived from the Scots word "goulf" meaning "to strike or cuff". Interestingly, a game rather similar to golf was first mentioned in the Dōngxuān Records, an 11th century Chinese book.
-
Golf employed wooden balls until the early 17th century, when the "featherie" ball arrived. A hand stitched leather pouch stuffed with goose feathers and coated with paint.
The Buyagift Golf Glossary
|
Golf has a sometimes impenetrable language all to itself. If you're worried about seeming like an amateur then just sprinkle your conversation with these following words, provided very kindly by our Buyagift golf pros (that's a very loosely applied term), and you'll be talking golf with the pros in no time!
|
- Ace - a hole in one by any other name
- Albatross - finishing a hole three under par
- Blast - smacking the ball so that sand/earth follows it sky-ward
- Bogey - finishing a hole one stroke over par
- Come-backer - another putt for when you just went past the hole
|
- Goldie Bounce - when the ball hits a tree in the rough and bounces back onto the fairway. AKA blimmin' lucky.
- Pterodactyl - finishing a hole six strokes under par. Probably impossible. Also, why pterodactyl?
- Whiff - taking a stroke and totally missing the ball. Whoops.
- Zinger - a ball smacked really hard into the sky.

I would like to deny all allegations by Bob Hope that during my last game of golf, I hit an eagle, a birdie, an elk and a moose.

Standing in the splendid Welsh countryside is the St. Pierre Country Club, home to two knockout 18 hole rounds guaranteed to try even the most tenacious Tiger. Experience a 45 minute instruction from top PGA Professionals before experiencing the wonder that is the futuristically sounding ‘Explanar’ system to hone your drive, and improve your swing. We can’t coordinate your plus-fours, but you’ll be putting with the best quicker then you can exclaim "Fore!"

Pilgrimage to the ancestral seat of golf, Burns and porridge, to Scotland, to Edinburgh and the Dalmahoy Country Club with its twin 18-hole golf courses. Set in 1000 acres of scenic parkland with expansive panoramas of brilliant Edinburgh Castle, the courses contain viciously deep bunkers and unusually troublesome trees sure to challenge even the most experienced clubbers.

Looking for a golf gift that's a sure to be appreciated? A full 18 holes of the Round of Golf experience at one of the spectacular Marriott courses across the UK might well be up your fairway.
