Helicopter Facts
-
The origin of the word 'helicopter' is rather intriguing. Adapted from the French hélicoptère, coined by Gustave de Ponton d'Amecourt in 1861, it is derived from the Greek words helix or helik meaning "spiral" or "turning", and "pter-", as in pterodactyl, meaning ‘wing’
-
1490, two years before Columbus’s epic sojourn, Leonardo Da Vinci invented a precursor to the modern helicopter called the Helical Air Screw. The man himself is quoted rather optimistically on his device: "...I have discovered that a screw-shaped device such as this, if it is well made from starched linen, will rise in the air if turned quickly..." Starching is, of course, the key to many of life’s conundrums.
-
The Chinese are said to have offered the first concept of rotary-wing aviation in the Fourth Century A.D. A book entitled "Pao Phu Tau" tells of the 'Master' describing flying cars "fei chhe" made with wood from the inner part of the jujube tree, and with ox-leather straps fastened to returning blades so as to set the machine in motion. We're a bit disappointed, frankly, that we're in the 21st century and we don't have flying cars yet.

Customer Reviews of Helicopter flights
My boyfriend bought me the London helicopter tour as a surprise anniversary presant. London looked amazing from so high up, the pilot took us over the Gherkin and Houses of Parliament, and I even saw the people inside the carriages of the London eye! I thoroughly recommend the helicopter tour, it doesn't matter whether you're into heights or not the flight is so smooth!

This was an excellent gift. My wife loves emmerdale and so I thought I'd treat her. It came really quickly, next day, and I made her phone on her actual birthday to book it so she had something to look forward to. She really enjoyed herself on the helicopter tour and saw all the Emmerdale landmarks (I don't think I'd have been able to but I don't watch it as much as her). Really well organised and a great experience.

I managed to resist humming the Dambusters theme for the whole time on this helicopter trip - quite an acheivement! All jokes aside, it was a brilliant tour flying over all the sights and finding out about the wartime fighter pilots and the RAF training that went on over here
