Photo facts
- Did you know that the first camera obscura and pinhole camera was created by Ibn al-Haytham in the 11th century? Albertus Magnus discovered silver nitrate in the 16th century and Wilhelm Homberg discovered the photochemical effect of light darkening chemicals in 1694, so the basics of modern cameras have been around for a really long time.
- The first colour photo was taken by James Maxwell in 1861, and was an additive projected image of a tartan ribbon that looked like the face of a bunny rabbit.
- The word photography was coined by Sir John Herschel in 1839 and translates as 'light writing'.
