The Talented Mr Ripley
Would Robert Ripley have believed what his first cartoon in 1918 would create? Originally appearing in a New York newspaper, the comic went on to start a global phenomenon. Robert LeRoy Ripley was the first cartoonist to earn one million dollars. At one time it was said that he was receiving more mail than the President of the United States.
The cartoon is still being produced and is featured in over 200 newspapers in 42 countries. During his life Ripley visited over 200 countries collecting stories and objects for his Odditoriums, many of which are now featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not! London.
