got the voucher for my dads 80th birthday! he used to work on the railway and still loves it to this day so this present was amazing for him. The staff were so helpful and welcomed us right from the start and told us what my dad could enjoy and join in on the day! he loved it, from sitting in the front of a train going to duffield to actually joining the drivers on the steam train, it was perfect! the scenery, the ambiance, the atmosphere everything and to top it all off an exhibition of veteran cars too outside the railway. its a must for all railway enthusiasts, my dad loved it (so did me and my mam who sat in the carriage on each journey. cant top it!

Our wives bought the "Ecclesbourne Valley Rail Experience" as a birthday present which was used last week. We are not particular rail enthusiasts but would always take an interest in rail museums etc.
The day, which lasts 6 hours, started with a short introduction into the history of this community owned and locally managed run railway and safety aspects. There were only 4 persons allowed on our day and within the hour we were all experiencing driving a locomotive and shunting stock around the goods yard. They also have a gradient straight run which was great fun especially on the descent.
We were provided with a good lunch on one of their restaurant cars and afterwards moved on to the diesel passenger trains.
This train involved pulling a further 2 coaches on the 8 mile run to Duffield. We did the journey twice and each drove both uphill and downhill. Stopping at level crossings and to allow the sheep to leave the line!
The train company operates a service at weekends and certain other days which also connects with mainline rail at Duffield.
Tuition was expertly marshalled by John and Richard and the whole day well worth the cost. I must mention our nearby 5 star B&B, The Old Lock-Up, providing first class accommodation in Wirksworth.

My wife and daughters bought me “A Day with a Train Driver on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway”. It was a most enjoyable experience. Although I love trains I am not a train buff. My driver and all the staff were very welcoming and experienced. The driver quickly put me at my ease and introduced me to the history of the community-owned and locally-managed railway which ran between Wirksworth and Duffield in Derbyshire.
The nine mile railway supports modern and period Diesel Multiple Units in a variety of liveries and configurations on various tracks and station layouts situated in a stunning countryside environment. From the drivers cab I was able to enjoyed an unprecedented view of both nature and the railway.
My wife and I had a wonderful lunch in a modern dining car (used as the Gatwick Express until 2008) alongside platform 2 at Wirksworth Station. At the end of the day all my questions, however obscure, were answered. A fantastic day out.

My dad loves trains so we sent him on this day with a train driver experience. The Ecclesbourne Valley railway is lovely very picturesque. Dad enjoyed being in the front car with the driver seeing where it all happens. Me and my brother got to have a lovely buffet lunch with him too. Think Dad was rather sorry to see the train being packed away at the end of the day!
