The staff looked and acted as if we and other guests were not expected. There certainly was no atmosphere of welcome, nor any invitation to relax in the lounge area whilst tables were being prepared. (four oclock is the time you will eat! We were 20 minutes early). The position of the house on the lake side was everything that has been written about it, whilst the furnishing and fixtures were of an equally agreeable presentation. The service was little better that the fayre being offered. The sandwiches were limited in their variety, and quite ordinary, without garnish and served on what appeared to be manufactured bread. The three tiered cake stand had not been polished for some time, whilst the cakes could not have been baked by a person with confectionery training. A week after our visit other members of our family visited for afternoon tea and found the situation much as I have described. A memorable visit certainly, but for the wrong reason. I couldn't help thinking that those guests who were taking home unconsumned food were doing so for the prestigious box they had been given.

We visited Sharrow Bay Hotel on a perfect sunny day and had a most memorable experience. We had a window table with a wonderful view of the lake and we enjoyed the whole Sharrow Bay experience from beginning to end. The staff were extremely pleasant and courteous throughout and nothing was too much trouble. The tea was divine - fresh tea made with leaves not teabags and served in an exquisite china teapot. We had fresh sandwiches and a scrumptious array of cakes/shortbread/fresh cream cakes and hot toasted buttered teacakes all served in lovely surroundings. Supplies were plentiful and the cakes we couldn't manage to eat were carefully packed up in a box decorated with a fresh flower for us to take home. After we had finished the afternoon tea we sat a while in the beautiful conservatory and then walked around the delightful gardens. This was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon which I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone. It was a brilliant gift to my husband and I from our two daughters and proved to be a total success - so much so that we have purchased another Buyagift package which we hope to enjoy shortly.

Wettest and windiest weekend for years coincided with a massive cross country trip for a birthday treat. Was it worth it? - Absolutely yes!The Sharrow Bay Hotel is a beautiful old house nestling on the edge of Ullswater in the Lake District. Stepping inside is like walking through the screen into a Merchant-Ivory film. Sumptuous rooms gorgeous antiques and a welcome which was as warm as the open fires. The dining room overlooks the lake and we watched the colours changing minute by minute as the afternoon faded into the night. And the food! Delicate sandwiches; salmon ham cucumber; toasted teacakes and scones local made cakes and biscuits and cream cakes. Real tea from China in china- no chipped mugs and teabags here. All served with calm and elegance. Obviously the staff knew that we belonged to a higher station in life than the one we usually inhabit...and treated us accordingly.
