Please, please, please don't be put off by by Jane's review. We have now taken afternoon tea twice and are returning in July and August.
Of course the lighting in the Library is subdued - it's a castle! This only adds to the ambience of the room with it's deep and comfortable leather chairs and sofas. For those who want more light, teas are available in the conservatory.
We find service discreet but readily available. Sandwiches are freshly prepared and as much tea and coffee, or hot water, is immediately and courteously available on request.
Give it a try - you won't be disappointed.

Very Disappointed

We visited Dalhousie Castle for Afternoon Tea as a treat and to enjoy some time to catch up on family news. We were directed by the receptionist to the Library Bar which appeared so dingy and unwelcoming we looked around the building thinking we had gone to the wrong place! Eventually we made our way back and took a seat but a warm welcome was in short supply, only a surly waiter who took no notice of us making it feel like we had intruded on someone's living room. Needless to say the service was non existent and the food was not much better. Rock hard scones and dry sandwiches were the order of the day and I would not have dared to ask for a little bit of hot water for the tea pot!. Considering the cost of such basic things I would certainly not call this good value for money. The experience of an old fashioned Afternoon Tea is very popular at the moment but I would definitely nor recommend this venue as an option

Our son and daughter-in-law gave us a voucher for high tea at Dalhousie Castle. Fortunately the day we chose turned out to be sunny and warm which gave us the opportunity to stroll round the grounds and visit the falconry centre before having our tea. When we went in to the castle we were greeted by very friendly courteous and helpful staff. We chose to have our high tea in the Library where the service and quality of the food was outstanding. We have frequent visitors from Australia and have decided that we will take them there on their next visits as we are sure that it is the sort of experience that will leave a lasting memory and impression. All in all a very pleasant experience which we hope to repeat in the near future.
