If you've ever wanted to learn the skills required to drive a steam train then this is definitely for you. Accompanied at all times by your instructor, you'll get the chance to take the trains controls and learn how to move off and stop smoothly. There will be plenty of opportunity to hone your skills during the day before you buffer up the engine to a 25 ton brake van. This experience also includes a fascinating visit to the signal box and a tour of the locomotive yard.
Please arrive at the venue in good time on your chosen date. Your experience will begin at 8.30am. Following breakfast and an introductory briefing you will be taken to the engine and will learn the basic skills required to drive a steam locomotive. You will take the controls, learn how to move off and stop smoothly, and buffer up the engine to a 25 ton brake van. You will also visit the signal box and locomotive yard. The day includes lunch and will last approximately 7.5 hours. You will receive complimentary souvenirs to round off your experience.

Your voucher is valid for 10 months. You must pre-book a date for your experience. This experience does not run between October and March. You must be aged between 18 and 70, reasonably fit and healthy and not on any medication; however, for those over 70, a doctor’s note is required. Overalls are provided and you will need to wear strong, sensible footwear. Despite the warmth of a steam locomotive, during inclement weather it is advisable to bring warm clothing. Please note this experience is available on weekdays only. This experience is not available during school summer holidays (16th July - 3rd September).

Learn to drive an engine and take it for a spin and see various other aspects of a preserved steam railway. A day to remember It was good to see all that the Kent & East Sussex Railway is doing to preserve the Steam train heritage. All the sessions in the signal box, Engine shed, repair workshop were excellent each hosted by the dedicated experts working at the yard. Driving the steam engine was great fun, and I really feel that I could drive one , and stop in the right place. 08 May 2014
Steam Driving Experiance The whole day was very enjoyable. All the staff and volanteers were very helpful and their facts and knowledge was all very interesting. Excellent breakfast & lunch with plenty to drink as it does get warm on the footplate....!!! Would highly recommend this experiance 25 April 2014
