Find out if you have what it takes to drive a steam train with this fun and unique experience. Perfect for locomotive enthusiasts, this day out gives you the chance to prepare the train, learn how to use the controls and switch tracks at the station – just like it would have been done 50 years ago! Your experience will include a delicious lunch, and will end with the ultimate challenge; climbing a fearsome 1:27 gradient hill following the route of a former quarry line.
This steam train driving experience is a fantastic treat for locomotive enthusiasts! Your experience will take place at the charming Wirksworth Yard – situated in Derbyshire’s picturesque Gentle Valley – and will begin with a welcome and safety briefing. An experienced professional will then show you how to prepare the locomotive and give you thorough instructions about how to use the controls. You will then have the opportunity to ‘shunt the yard’ – an exercise involving switching the train across tracks – just like it would have been done over 50 years ago. You will then be treated to a wonderful lunch, before your final challenge – guiding the train up a steep 1:27 gradient hill which follows the route of a former quarry line. Your instructor will be present at all times to ensure your safety.

Your voucher is valid until 31st December 2013. It is for one person. Participants must be over 18 years of age and must be reasonably fit and in good health. Stout footwear is recommended. Participants may not consume any alcohol on the day of the experience. All dates are subject to availability. This voucher cannot be extended.

Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. Mick & Hylton, instructors beyond the norm. Professional Engineers from an era that put the Great in Britain. What they do not know is not worth knowing about the skill in controling a Steam Loco and not only local but indeed National historical railway issues from a time remembered by a few but hopefully to be enjoyed by many for the future. Absolutely friendly staff and a great day out.
