Chelsea facts

For its first 28 years Stamford Bridge was exclusively used by the London Athletics Club for athletics meetings.

The stadium was first offered to Fulham FC. But after they turned it down the owners decided to form Chelsea FC to occupy the ground.

Under the Chelsea Pitch Owners articles of association, if the club ever decided to move from Stamford Bridge they would relinquish the name Chelsea Football Club.

In 1905, Chelsea FC adopted an image of a Chelsea pensioner as their crest contributing to the Pensioners nickname. From 1953 onwards the club adopted a blue lion based on elements of the coat of arms of the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea.
