Wembley Stadium facts

The original Wembley Stadium was first known as the British Empire Exhibition Stadium and was built for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 at a cost of £750,000

The first event to be held at the stadium was the 1923 FA Cup Final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United. Such was the eagerness of fans and casual observers to attend the final at the new stadium that vast numbers of people crammed into the stadium, overflowing onto the pitch when there was no room in the terraces.

The new stadium was built at a cost of £798 million.

Wembley's 90,000 all seater capacity is the largest in the UK and the second largest in Europe.
