Newcastle United has played at St James's Park since the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End FC in 1891.

Newcastle United played in Newcastle East Ends red shirts until 1894 when they adopted the now iconic black and white striped shirts to avoid colour clashes with teams such as Liverpool and Woolwich Arsenal.

After the merger in 1891, several new names were suggested including Newcastle Rangers and Newcastle City.

The club's current logo takes elements from the cities coat of arms.
