Targa Florio

Sicily

The Targa Florio was an open road endurance sports car race held high in the mountains of Sicily near Palermo. It was established in 1906 and it was also part of the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1973.

While the first races consisted of a whole tour of the island of Sicily, the track length in the race's last decades was limited to 11 laps of the 45 mile, Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie.

Although the Targa Florio was an open road rally-type race with practically no safety features, amazingly only 9 people died at the event over the 71 year and 61 race history.
