Excellent gift.

It was very cold and a massive queue and long wait in the castle but very worthwhile.

A laughably bad restaurant
19 August 2019
The meal was without doubt the worst meal we have ever experienced. I want to be very clear to anyone thinking about buying this as a gift. This is a ‘lowest bidder’ style restaurant, the food is quite literally as cheap as possible to produce. They seem to cater to Buyagift vouchers and coach tour packages only. We would not have paid for this meal in a normal restaurant but there’s not much anyone can do for a prepaid meal. The castle costs £17.50 each to book. Do this and go to pretty much any other restaurant in the city for probably less money. I’m convinced that the 5 star google reviews for the restaurant are paid for because there is no way anyone in their right mind could describe this as “best meal in my life”. Reading through them is genuinely baffling. When I made the booking, I specified that I was a vegetarian so it was a bit surprising that there were no non-meat starters. I ended up having the parma ham, mozzarella and melon without the ham. When the waiter brought it out he made a joke that the ham was actually underneath. His general lack of charisma made it hard to tell so it was just a weird comment to hear. The other starter was pâté on oatcake with an inexplicable smear of sweet chilli sauce and half-wilted salad leaves. The oatcake was supermarket packet quality as was the pâté. Our mains, a stuffed aubergine and lamb shank, were of similar quality. The sauce on the aubergine was clearly straight out of a jar and the lamb wasn’t great either. Both were served with a side of poorly roasted potatoes and a boiled ‘vegetable medley’ straight from of the freezer. I went for the “warm apple pie with ice cream” and my girlfriend went with the lemon tart. The pie was cold and the tart pastry was soft and unappetising. We had a peek into the kitchen and it’s a church hall style affair and there are nicer bathrooms in most Edinburgh pubs. Like the food, the decor is from a bygone era with an atmosphere to match. Laughably unpleasant.

Great castle, poor meal
17 April 2019
We decided to use this gift whilst on a city break in Edinburgh. The castle was great and collecting tickets easy. The o my let down was the meal. It was a typical school trip/tourist group pre booked restaurant with a set menu that sounded more exciting Than it was. Over cooked duck breast with a kid that tasted like blueberry jam (straight from the jar!) This gift could be great if the restaurant was changed to a good local restaurant.

Lovely gift
05 January 2019
Castle worth a visit..do a free tour..it's only half an hour as opposed to one we did in the museum which was an hour and a half and I lost interest!..it's a good walk up the hill..fantastic views..the restaurant was further away than I imagined but found it with no problems..little old fashioned as some other reviews I have seen..but food nice and staff very attentive.

We received our voucher as a gift for our wedding so we picked a trip to Edinburgh. Entry to the castle for 2 was included and it really is fabulous! And also a 3 course meal for 2 at a local restaurant, and the food was lovely. Very easy to book, we did it by phone. Would reccommmend the website for anyone looking to buy a gift, we certainly loved it.

Thumbs Up Castle Thumbs Down Meal
18 April 2017
Both myself had visited the castle years ago but thought a revisit was on the cards. We were not disappointed as due to all the nooks and crannies we both saw new things and the views across Edinburgh are fabulous. It was extremely busy so at peak times be prepared to queue to see certain things due to space and popularity. We had booked the meal for later the same day. I will list the positives first - great service by owners/staff, lovely choice on the set menu and the quality of the produce used was 1st class. Despite all these positives the meal was totally disappointing due to over salting of the starters and main courses. I know seasoning is personal taste. However my partner is a great lover of salt in his food but even he agreed that over salting had rendered certain aspects of the meal inedible. Unfortunately the meal marred our day. Book the castle and avoid the meal unless you love salt.
