Anniversary lunch... sadly not what we expected

Have visited this restaurant before on a buy a gift experience and had a wonderful time & meal... we thought we would visit again Unfortunately it wasn’t the same experience nothing to do with Covid but the food & service was a disappointment This time round... There were only two members of waiting staff working to a busy restaurant.. The first thing the waiter said to us was to explain the App that was advertised on our table - if we wanted to order drinks & food etc saves us waiting for him! We were out for an experience to feel special and pampered .. We felt like we had to eat & go not a relaxing experience..& waiting staff not very attentive The chutneys and popadoms cane but not enough mango chutney when the waiter did eventually re visit our table we asked him for some more & then he delivered the wrong chutney! He was in a rush to take our food order.. He then tried to deliver food that was for another table to ours! I ordered calamari when they came were dry and chewy - looked like they had been left under the hot plate for too long... The main & dessert were ok Nothing special this time round - no Wow factor felt we had to rush our meal ... Unfortunately we won’t be returning

Amazing culinary treat

Warmly welcomed to the restaurant, sceptical at first having read previous buy a gift review! No other words can express our experience other than superb. Everything is cooked perfection and portion sizes were good considering this being a contemporary restaurant. Felt like a five course meal with the poppadoms and mini Dhokla surprise. Service was perfect, and even treated to a virgin mocktail instead of Prosecco. Highly recommended and excelling all expectations. Dhaal makhani to die for!!!! Thank you

We had lunched and dined previously at Hawkyns and were excited to return. Sadly gone were the innovative 'Indian inspired British dishes' and subtle Indian spicing. The menu was boring and, to make it worse, two of the five mains choices commanded a supplement. A starter of squid rings tasted precooked and warmed through, rather than fresh, and had to be changed. Our mains were no more exotic than we get in our local Indian restaurant - biryani and mixed kebabs. The rose scented 'cheesecake' was a small dollop of mousse in the bottom of a glass - was indeed rose scented but far too sweet. The chocolate mousse was 'nice'. There were two positives: the waiting staff were very friendly and deal with our complaints in an exemplary fashion. We enjoyed the ambience of the second room - although we, and our neighbours on either side, found the chairs too close together. Overall we felt Hawkyns is trying to pull in custom by 'dumbing down' a previously excellent dining experience - 'packing them in and selling it cheap'. Unfortunately for us it means this venue will no longer tempt us to return.
