My daughter and I decided to book an afternoon tea in Central London as a treat for both of us. After going through what was available on Buyagift, I booked the Athaenium as it was very reasonably priced for a 5 star hotel. The good parts: the restaurant is very relaxing and the seating is so comfortable. The scones were light and delicious and served with Tiptree jam and clotted cream. There was a wide choice of drinks and you could try out different types of tea. The staff were friendly and pleasant. The parts that could be improved: the bread on some of the sandwiches was a bit dry; the cakes were similar in format - nearly all of them were based on different flavoured mousses on a chocolate base; the staff could have been a bit more attentive. For example, I would have preferred them to be a bit more proactive in coming to our table and checking that we had everything that we needed. If It had been possible, I would give the experience 3.5 rather than 3 - but I took into account that this is a 5 star hotel, so was hoping for something nearer to perfection.
