I should start by saying that this is the 3rd time that we come to the St James's Hotel with a Buyagift voucher and never did we experience this.... Firstly, our booking was missing (thankfully I had the confirmation email with me), which didn't look great in front of our guests but which was swiftly resolved. The cream team in itself was good and very festive - quality of sandwiched and patisseries in particular (the sultanas scones were dry). Then came the bill... when I queried why an additional fee has been added, I was told "well this voucher is worth £ X and this voucher is worth £ Y so you are missing £ XX in total, plus drinks + service charge". This has never happened to us with ANY buyagift - ie you buy an experience and not a £ value voucher. The poor waiter couldn't explain why except that his manager had told him this was the process. Bizzarely the manager was nowhere to be found so eventually we were told we could go and that this would be worked out on their side. This was a relief but left a sour taste to our experience - quite embarrassing in front of our guests. Shame as the cream tea was good and of course, the surroundings very pleasant.
