An Afternoon to Savour at The Athenaeum

Two of us from the Buyagift team had the pleasure of indulging in an afternoon tea experience at the renowned Athenaeum Hotel in the heart of Mayfair, London. Nestled opposite Green Park and just a short walk from Hyde Park Corner, The Athenaeum is a refreshing stop in the capital’s hustle and bustle. Known for once being a Gentlemen’s club and its five-star service today, it is the ideal spot for a catch-up with a close friend – and perhaps even the perfect setting for a romantic proposal.

As we stepped into the hotel’s lobby, a smartly dressed concierge greeted us and gracefully led us to our window-side table in the elegant Galvin restaurant. A peak at the other end of the restaurant revealed a more secluded space ideal for those seeking a more intimate setting. Once seated, we were offered a choice between the vegan and regular menu, accompanied by our first pots of tea. What set this experience apart was its three-course structure – a refreshing change from the traditional all-at-once spread. This thoughtful approach meant each course arrived freshly prepared and at the perfect temperature – no dry scones or soggy sandwiches here!

First Course: Sandwiches with a Twist

Our afternoon began with an artfully presented platter of generously filled sandwiches. We opted for the meat selection, which did not disappoint. Highlights included a Singaporean twist on a classic egg and cress sandwich that surprised us with a delicate note of Kaya jam, a generously-packed cheese and chutney combination, a Maldon-cured salmon sandwich served on Guinness-infused bread, and a velvety coronation chicken roll.

My friend toasted the occasion with a glass of bubbles, while I opted for a refreshing gin cocktail instead – made with Hayman's gin, mint and strawberries. It was light, fragrant and the perfect pairing to our savoury course.

Second Course: Warm Scones and the Tea Trolley Experience

Next came the second course: scones. We asked for both plain and fruity varieties, which arrived straight from the oven, alongside a generous dollop of clotted cream, strawberry and raspberry jam. As we settled in to enjoy them, manager Cornel suggested we try the Athenaeum’s unique tea trolley – and we’re so glad we did.

From a vast selection of loose-leaf teas, we crafted our own unique blend with the guidance of the expert server Jessica, who measured everything with great care. Our customised tea was then brewed and served alongside the final course – a thoughtful touch that made the experience feel extra special.

Third Course: A Pastry Tree Masterpiece

The final course was a culinary showstopper: a tree-shaped cake stand adorned with pastries inspired by the pastry chef’s favourite flowers. Each dessert was generously portioned and bursting with flavour – from delicate tangy notes to rich, creamy fillings. It was clear that this was not just tea – it was an artistic expression thoughtfully put together by head pastry chef Sergei Kuzmin and his team.

“When you go to a vegan afternoon tea, I’ve seen a lot of slices of cakes and some crumble, which can be very disappointing. I took my education at The Excel where there was a lot of training on a vegan menu, which I am working on here with the pastry chefs. We will soon be launching it” shared chef Kuzmin on what’s next to come at The Athenaeum.

Though we gave it a valiant effort, finishing the entire “pastry tree” in one sitting proved a bit ambitious. Thankfully, the attentive staff were happy to box up our leftovers, ensuring we left not only satisfied but also with sweet souvenirs to savour later.

A Thoughtful and Memorable Gift Experience

As we made our way out, we carried more than just our pastry box. Each of us also received a beautifully packaged tin of our personal tea blend – a charming reminder of a well-spent afternoon. This experience at The Athenaeum is more than just a traditional afternoon tea for two – it's a moment of indulgence and celebration.
