About the experience

Unleash your inner barista and learn all about your favourite elixir at HEJ Coffee's roastery in Elephant and Castle. This coffee-roasting experience will make any coffee lover a connoisseur in no time! After a welcome cup of fresh coffee, you'll learn about the journey of the coffee making, all the way from bean to cup. The group will enjoy a live demonstration of the 30kg BESCA ROASTER, including the chance for you to try it out yourself! After the perfect batch of coffee has been roasted, you’ll get to taste your creation alongside a variety of coffees from around the world. This is a great opportunity for you to identify unique flavours and refine your coffee-tasting palate. Next up, you’ll be taken over to the barista bar and shown how to operate a professional espresso machine. Fresh espresso in hand, add ice and a few liquors to get started in the coffee 'til cocktails masterclass. Espresso martini anyone? Leave with expert coffee knowledge and your very own 250g bag of coffee as a delicious memento!

Great Teacher but Group Bigger Than Advertised

Really interesting experience and great teacher who was knowledgeable about the subject matter. He provided a really thorough explanation of how coffee’s grown, roasted, etc, with tastings and demonstrations of roasting + espresso and espresso martini making, as well as 2 free bags of coffee at the end. Think could have been a bit shorter as ended up being an hour longer than the 4 hours advertised, which is quite a long time to try and stay mentally engaged. The group was also 10 people, which is quite a bit bigger than the 6 advertised. This made it a bit cramped and wasn’t as ideal as someone with social anxiety.

Bought as a Gift Experience for a friend

This is more of an informative chat than an interactive experience. Admittedly we had to leave after 3.5 hours (venue told us the duration was 3 hrs) so missed the martini part. It could be excellent with a few tweaks. Standing up for 2 hours listening to someone talk is not my idea of fun. We also had had no coffee by that point - if you book, have coffee and a snack in the cafe on arrival before the 'experience' starts! Why not serve coffee/croissants to the group in an area of the cafe and do the lecture part there whilst we are comfortable? If you are hard of hearing, it is hard to understand the staff member due to the continuous fan noise of the roasting machine. Again, much mitigated if you do that part in the cafe. Needs more interactive stuff but maybe this is curtailed currently due to Covid protocols.
