Conceived by Isambard Brunel and opened in 1858, the ESR line ran successfully for many glorious years. But due to the devastating effect of two world wars, the invention of the motor car and more efficient modes of transport, the East Somerset Railway let the coal burn out and station whistle blow for the last time, in 1964.
